Asking for Information with Partial Interrogatives

In French, partial interrogatives are used to ask for specific information other than a simple yes/no answer. These questions begin with a question word such as:

  • Où (where)
  • Quand (when)
  • Pourquoi (why)
  • Comment (how)
  • Quoi / Que (what)
  • Qui (who)
  • Combien (de) (how much/many)

These words help you ask about place, time, reason, manner, identity, quantity, etc.

1. Common Partial Interrogative Words

French English Example
Où Where Où habites-tu ? (Where do you live?)
Quand When Quand arrives-tu ? (When do you arrive?)
Pourquoi Why Pourquoi étudies-tu ? (Why do you study?)
Comment How Comment vas-tu ? (How are you?)
Qui Who Qui est-ce ? (Who is it?)
Que / Quoi What Que fais-tu ? (What are you doing?)
Combien (de) How much/many Combien de frères as-tu ? (How many brothers do you have?)

2. Structure of Partial Questions

Partial questions usually follow this structure:

[Question word] + [verb] + [subject] + … ?

Examples: - Où vas-tu ? (Where are you going?) - Quand commence le cours ? (When does the class start?) - Pourquoi ris-tu ? (Why are you laughing?) - Comment s’appelle-t-il ? (What is his name?) - Qui parle ? (Who is speaking?) - Que veux-tu ? (What do you want?) - Combien coûte ce livre ? (How much does this book cost?)
