Adverbs of Quantity in French (Adverbes de quantité)

Adverbs of quantity indicate an undefined amount or degree. They can modify verbs, adjectives, or nouns to express “how much” or “to what extent” something happens or exists.

  • Modify a verb:
    Il mange beaucoup. (He eats a lot.)
  • Modify an adjective:
    Elle est très gentille. (She is very kind.)
  • Modify a noun:
    Il a trop de travail. (He has too much work.)

Common Adverbs of Quantity:

French English Example (FR) Example (EN)
beaucoup a lot/much Il travaille beaucoup. He works a lot.
trop too much Il mange trop. He eats too much.
assez enough/rather Elle est assez grande. She is tall enough.
peu little/not much Il parle peu. He speaks little.
tellement so much Il est tellement fatigué. He is so tired.
moins less J’ai moins de temps. I have less time.
plus more Elle veut plus de café. She wants more coffee.
autant as much Il mange autant que moi. He eats as much as I do.
suffisamment enough Tu as suffisamment d’argent. You have enough money.
