Adverbs that Connect Ideas in French (Adverbes de liaison)

Adverbs such as d’abord (first), ensuite (then/next), et puis (and then), and enfin (finally) are used to connect phrases or sentences. These adverbs help organize your ideas, show the order of events, and make your writing or speech clearer and more logical.

Common connecting adverbs:

French English Example (FR) Example (EN)
d’abord first D’abord, je me lève. First, I get up.
ensuite then/next Ensuite, je prends mon petit-déjeuner. Then, I have breakfast.
et puis and then Et puis, je vais à l’école. And then, I go to school.
enfin finally Enfin, je rentre à la maison. Finally, I go home.
après after Après, je fais mes devoirs. After, I do my homework.
de plus moreover/furthermore De plus, j’aime lire. Moreover, I like to read.
cependant however Cependant, il pleut. However, it is raining.
pourtant yet/nevertheless Pourtant, il sort. Yet, he goes out.
donc so/therefore Donc, je reste à la maison. So, I stay at home.
puis then Puis, je me repose. Then, I rest.
en outre furthermore En outre, elle parle espagnol. Furthermore, she speaks Spanish.
par contre on the other hand Par contre, il préfère le thé. On the other hand, he prefers tea.
en revanche conversely En revanche, elle n’aime pas le café. Conversely, she doesn’t like coffee.
ainsi thus/so Ainsi, nous avons terminé. Thus, we are done.
finalement eventually Finalement, ils arrivent. Eventually, they arrive.

These adverbs are usually placed at the beginning of a sentence or clause to indicate the sequence of actions.

2. Put the sentences in order using connecting adverbs

Arrange the following actions in a logical order and add the appropriate adverb at the beginning of each sentence:
