Plus-que-parfait and Passé Composé Exercises

The plus-que-parfait is used to describe actions that had already been completed before another action in the past. The passé composé, on the other hand, is used to describe completed actions in the past with a clear time frame.

When to Use Them

  • Plus-que-parfait: To indicate an action that occurred before another past action.
    • Example: J’avais fini mes devoirs avant de sortir. (I had finished my homework before going out.)
  • Passé Composé: To describe a specific, completed action in the past.
    • Example: J’ai mangé une pomme. (I ate an apple.)

Exercise 1: Fill in the Blanks

Complete the sentences with the correct form of the verb in plus-que-parfait or passé composé.

  1. Quand je (arriver) _________ à la gare, le train (partir) _________.
  2. Elle (finir) _________ ses devoirs avant que nous (arriver) _________.
