Exercise: Practicing the Verb “Être”

Here are some exercises to practice conjugating the verb être (to be) in French:

  1. Conjugate the verb “être” in the present tense for the following subjects:
    • Je content(e).
    • Tu étudiant(e).
    • Il/Elle professeur(e).
    • Nous en vacances.
    • Vous à l’heure.
    • Ils/Elles heureux/heureuses.


  1. Fill in the blanks with the correct form of “être” in the past tense (passé composé):
    • Hier, je très occupé(e).
    • La semaine dernière, nous à Paris.
    • Est-ce que tu malade ?
    • Ils/Elles en retard.
    • Vous très gentils.
    • Il/Elle absent(e) hier.


  1. Translate the following sentences into French using the verb “être”:

    • I am happy.

    • They are tired.

    • We are ready.

  1. Write a short paragraph about what you and your friends have done recently using different forms of “être.”
