Exercise: Conjugating Verbs Like Acheter

Practice conjugating stem-changing verbs (acheter, préférer, espérer, répéter, céder) in the present tense.
Remember: The “e” changes to “è” in all forms except nous and vous (e.g., j’achète but nous achetons).

1. Fill in the Blanks

Conjugate the verb for each subject.

Je (acheter) → J’achète un livre.

Tu (préférer) → Tu préfères le café.

Il (espérer) → Il espère gagner.

Nous (répéter) → Nous répétons la chanson.

Vous (céder) → Vous cédez la place.

Elles (acheter) → Elles achètent des fleurs.

2. Sentence Correction

Fix the incorrect conjugations (watch for missing “è” changes!).

Je prefere le thé. →

Nous esprons partir. →

(Note: “Nous” form keeps the original “e”!)

3. Translation Challenge

Translate into French using stem-changing verbs:

She hopes to travel. →

We buy a car. →

4. Creative Writing

Write 3 sentences about shopping or preferences using at least 2 different stem-changing verbs. Highlight the verbs.
