Understanding Simple Relative Pronouns: qui, que, dont, où

Relative pronouns connect two clauses by replacing a repeated noun and introducing a relative clause.
The main simple relative pronouns in French are qui, que, dont, and où.

Explanations & Examples

  • qui: replaces the subject (person or thing)
    • La femme qui parle est ma mère.
      (The woman who is speaking is my mother.)
  • que: replaces the direct object
    • Le livre que tu lis est intéressant.
      (The book that you are reading is interesting.)
  • dont: replaces “de + noun” (possession, expressions with “de”)
    • L’élève dont je parle est absent.
      (The student whom I am talking about is absent.)
    • C’est le film dont j’ai besoin.
      (That’s the film I need.)
  • où: replaces a place or time
    • La ville où je suis né.
      (The city where I was born.)
    • Le jour où nous sommes partis.
      (The day when we left.)
