Understanding Interrogative Pronouns

Interrogative pronouns are used to ask questions about people or things. There are two main forms:

1. Simple Form

• Qui ? — Who? (for people, subject or object)
  • Qui parle ? (Who is speaking?)
  • Tu vois qui ? (Who do you see?)
• Que ? / Qu’ ? — What? (for things, usually object)
  • Que fais-tu ? (What are you doing?)
  • Qu’est-ce que tu veux ? (What do you want?)

2. Compound Form (Lequel, Laquelle, Lesquels, Lesquelles)

Used to ask “which one(s)?” and agree in gender and number with the noun they replace.

• Lequel (masc. sing.), Laquelle (fem. sing.), Lesquels (masc. pl.), Lesquelles (fem. pl.)
  • Lequel veux-tu ? (Which one do you want? — masculine singular)
  • Laquelle préfères-tu ? (Which one do you prefer? — feminine singular)
  • Lesquels sont à toi ? (Which ones are yours? — masculine plural)
  • Lesquelles as-tu choisies ? (Which ones did you choose? — feminine plural)

They can also be used with prepositions: - Avec lequel pars-tu ? (With which one are you leaving?) - À laquelle penses-tu ? (Which one are you thinking about?)
