Understanding the Pronoun ‘y’

The pronoun ‘y’ replaces a place or a thing introduced by ‘à’ (to, at, in), or other prepositions of place.
It answers “where?” or “to what?” after the verb.

Key rules:

  1. ‘y’ replaces: a place or a thing introduced by ‘à’, or a preposition of place (chez, dans, sur, en, etc.).

  2. Placement: Before the verb (J’y vais).

  3. Never use ‘y’ for people: Use ‘à lui/elle/eux/elles’ for people.


Exercises

1. Find what ‘y’ replaces (underline and answer où ? or à quoi ?):

(Example: “Je vais à l’école. → où ?”)

  1. Il va à Paris. →

2. Replace the underlined part with ‘y’:

  1. Elle va à la bibliothèque. → Elle va.
  2. J’entre dans la maison. → J’ entre.
  3. Nous pensons à notre projet. → Nous pensons.
  4. Il participe à la compétition. → Il participe.
  5. Tu restes chez Paul. → Tu restes.
  6. Nous allons en Italie. → Nous allons.
  7. Je réponds à la question. → J’ réponds.
  8. Vous retournez à l’école. → Vous retournez.
  9. Ils montent sur la montagne. → Ils montent.
  10. Elle pense à son avenir. → Elle pense.

3. Correct the errors:

  1. “J’y vais à Paris.” →
  2. “Elle y pense à son travail.” →
  3. “Nous y entrons dans la salle.” →
  4. “Tu y restes chez tes amis.” →
  5. “Il y participe à un concours.” →
  6. “Vous y retournez en France.” →
  7. “Je y pense à mon projet.” →
  8. “Ils y montent sur la scène.” →
  9. “Elle y répond à la question.” →
  10. “Nous y allons en Italie.” →

4. Translate into French:

  1. “He is going there (to Paris).” →
  2. “We are thinking about it (the project).” →
  3. “She is entering (the room).” →
  4. “They are participating (in the contest).” →
  5. “I am staying there (at Paul’s).” →
  6. “You are going there (to Italy).” →
  7. “We are returning there (to school).” →
  8. “He is thinking about it (his future).” →
  9. “You are answering it (the question).” →
  10. “She is going there (to the library).” →
