Understanding the Pronoun ‘en’

The pronoun ‘en’ replaces a noun introduced by ‘de’ (of, from, some, any) or a quantity.
It answers “of what?”, “of whom?”, “how many?” after the verb.

Key rules:

  1. ‘en’ replaces: nouns with ‘de’ (du, de la, des, de l’, de, d’), or a quantity.

  2. Placement: Before the verb (J’en parle).

  3. With quantities: Keep the number/quantity after the verb (J’en prends deux).

  4. Never use ‘en’ for people: Use ‘de lui/d’elle/d’eux/d’elles’ for people.
