Describing Things in French

In French, you can describe objects using color, size, shape, material, and function. Here are the main ways to characterize things:

1. Colors (Les couleurs)

You can use de or en to indicate the material:

• chose + de + matière: une table de bois (a table of wood)
• chose + en + matière: une table en bois (a wooden table)

Common materials: bois (wood), métal (metal), plastique (plastic), verre (glass), coton (cotton), cuir (leather), pierre (stone), papier (paper).

4. Shape (La forme)

• Use adjectives: rond(e) (round), carré(e) (square), rectangulaire (rectangular), ovale (oval), triangulaire (triangular).
• Or: en forme de + noun: un ballon en forme de cœur (a heart-shaped balloon).

5. Function (La fonction)

• Ça sert à + infinitif: Ça sert à écrire. (It is used to write.)
• On l’utilise pour + infinitif: On l’utilise pour couper. (We use it to cut.)
