Expressing Simultaneous Actions in French

In French, simultaneous actions can be expressed in several ways, depending on whether you want to emphasize a precise moment, a duration, or immediate succession. Here are the main expressions and how to use them:

1. Key Expressions for Simultaneity

Expression Usage/Meaning Example
quand, lorsque when (precise moment or duration) Quand il arrive, je pars. (When he arrives, I leave.)
au moment où, à l’instant où at the (precise) moment when Au moment où tu es parti, il a appelé.
pendant que while (simultaneity + duration) Je lis pendant qu’il cuisine.
tant que, aussi longtemps que as long as (simultaneity + duration) Tant que tu travailles, je reste ici.
dès que, aussitôt que as soon as (immediate succession) Dès qu’il arrive, on commence.
depuis que since (starting point in the past) Depuis qu’il est parti, je suis triste.
le gérondif (en + participe présent) while/by (doing) Il chante en travaillant. (He sings while working.)

2. How to Use

  • Quand, Lorsque, Au moment où, À l’instant où
Use these to indicate a precise moment when two actions happen together.
Ex: Au moment où je suis sorti, il a commencé à pleuvoir.

  • Pendant que
Use for two actions happening over a period of time.
Ex: Elle étudie pendant que je regarde la télé.

  • Tant que, Aussi longtemps que
Use to express that two actions last for the same duration.
Ex: Tant que tu dors, je ne fais pas de bruit.

  • Dès que, Aussitôt que
Use for immediate succession—one action follows another instantly.
Ex: Dès qu’il arrive, on mange.

  • Depuis que
Use to indicate that something has been happening since a specific event.
Ex: Depuis qu’il est parti, elle pleure.

  • Le gérondif (en + participe présent)
Use to show two actions happening at the same time, often with the same subject.
Ex: Il apprend en écoutant la radio.
