Locating with Prepositions of Place and “où”

In French, to describe where something or someone is, we use prepositions of place with the question word où (where). These prepositions help us locate objects or people in space.

1. Key Prepositions of Place

French Preposition	Meaning	Example
dans	in, inside	Le livre est dans le sac. (The book is in the bag.)
sur	on, on top of	Le chat est sur la table. (The cat is on the table.)
sous	under	Les chaussures sont sous le lit. (The shoes are under the bed.)
devant	in front of	Il y a un arbre devant la maison. (There is a tree in front of the house.)
derrière	behind	Le jardin est derrière la maison. (The garden is behind the house.)
à côté de	next to, beside	La boulangerie est à côté de la banque. (The bakery is next to the bank.)
en face de	opposite, facing	L’école est en face de la poste. (The school is opposite the post office.)
de l’autre côté de	on the other side of	Le parc est de l’autre côté de la rue. (The park is on the other side of the street.)
au milieu de	in the middle of	La fontaine est au milieu de la place. (The fountain is in the middle of the square.)

Note:
- Use où to ask about location: Où est la bibliothèque ? (Where is the library?) - Prepositions are followed by de (of), which may contract: à côté du parc (next to the park), en face de l’école (opposite the school).

2. Asking for Directions

To ask for directions, use polite expressions and the prepositions above.

• Excusez-moi, où est… ? (Excuse me, where is…?)
• Pouvez-vous me dire où se trouve… ? (Can you tell me where … is?)
• Comment aller à… ? (How do I get to…?)

3. Giving Directions

When giving directions, use verbs and prepositions:

• Allez tout droit (Go straight ahead)
• Tournez à gauche / à droite (Turn left / right)
• Traversez la rue (Cross the street)
• C’est à côté de… / en face de… (It’s next to… / opposite…)
